Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid, HCl) is the most effective chemical for lowering pool pH and total alkalinity. When added to pool water, it reacts with carbonates and bicarbonates, releasing CO2 and reducing the buffering capacity of the water. This dual action makes it ideal for correcting both high pH and high alkalinity in a single treatment.

The dose depends on four key factors: your pool water volume, the gap between your current and target value, your pool surface type, and the concentration of the acid bottle you purchased.

The ideal pH range for a swimming pool is 7.2 to 7.6, with 7.4 considered the sweet spot. At this range, chlorine works most efficiently, swimmer comfort is maximized, and pool surfaces and equipment are protected from corrosion and scaling.

pH below 7.2 is too acidic and irritates eyes and skin, degrades chlorine quickly, and can etch plaster surfaces. pH above 7.8 causes chlorine to become largely inactive, promotes algae growth, and can cloud the water with calcium deposits.

Wait at least 30 minutes to 1 hour after adding muriatic acid before swimming, but only if the pump is running and the acid has been fully circulated. Most pool professionals recommend waiting 2-4 hours and retesting pH before allowing swimmers.

The percentage refers to the concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the solution. 31.45% is standard industrial-strength muriatic acid, the most cost-effective per unit of active ingredient. It is more hazardous to handle due to stronger fumes.

If you are using 20% concentration acid from a home improvement store, multiply these amounts by approximately 1.5. If you are using 14.5% diluted pool store acid, multiply by approximately 2.2.

High total alkalinity increases the amount of acid needed for the same pH drop. A pool with TA at 120 ppm needs roughly 20 to 30 percent more acid than a pool with TA at 80 ppm to achieve the same pH reduction. If you are consistently using more acid than this table suggests and pH barely moves, check total alkalinity first.

What Muriatic Acid Actually Does to Your Pool

Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid diluted to a safe working concentration for residential use. When added to pool water, it reacts with carbonates and bicarbonates in the water, consuming them and releasing CO2. This reduces the alkaline buffering capacity of the water and lowers pH.

It lowers both pH and total alkalinity simultaneously. This is why adding acid to chase pH while ignoring total alkalinity leads to the baking soda and acid seesaw that frustrates so many pool owners. Every acid addition reduces TA as well. Full-strength 31.45% acid works fastest and requires the smallest volume per treatment. However, it produces more fumes and requires more careful handling. For most residential pool owners, 20% or 31.45% from a pool supply store is the practical choice.

Muriatic Acid Safety: What You Must Know Before Handling

Muriatic acid causes chemical burns on contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Fumes from the acid irritate respiratory tissue and can cause serious damage with prolonged exposure. These are not theoretical risks they are real and immediate.

Before you touch the bottle:

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, not thin latex
  • Wear safety goggles that seal around the eyes, not just glasses
  • Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
  • Keep the bottle upright and cap tightly sealed until the moment of use

When adding acid to water:

  • Always add acid to water, never water to acid adding water to acid causes a violent exothermic reaction
  • Pre-dilute by pouring the measured acid dose into a full bucket of pool water
  • Never pour acid directly from the bottle into the pool in one concentrated stream
  • Never add acid near the skimmer concentrated acid damages the plastic components

If skin or eye contact occurs:

  • Skin: flush immediately with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes
  • Eyes: flush with clean water for at least 20 minutes and seek medical attention immediately
  • Remove contaminated clothing while flushing

Keep children and pets away from the pool area while handling acid and for at least 30 minutes after adding. Wait until pH is confirmed in range before swimming.

When to Split Your Muriatic Acid Dose

Split the dose when:

  • The calculator recommends more than 32 fl oz (1 quart) for a single addition
  • You need to drop pH by more than 0.4 units
  • Your pool’s TA is below 70 ppm (small buffering capacity means pH is sensitive to acid)

Why splitting works: Adding a large acid dose at once concentrates acid near the entry point before it fully dilutes. This can temporarily lower pH far below target in a localized zone, which can etch plaster and bleach vinyl near the return jets. It can also cause pH to overshoot the target when the full dose circulates, requiring correction in the other direction.

After Adding Muriatic Acid: The Correct Steps

What you do after adding acid is as important as how you dose it.

Step 1: Run the pump at full speed for at least 30 minutes after adding the pre-diluted acid. Full circulation distributes the acid evenly through the water volume. Testing before adequate circulation gives a falsely high or low pH reading depending on where you sample from.

Step 2: Wait four to six hours before retesting. The water needs time to fully equilibrate. Testing at 30 minutes gives you the reading from one area of the pool. Testing after four to six hours of circulation gives you the actual water chemistry.

Step 3: Test with a liquid drop kit, not strips. After acid addition, the pool water has slightly elevated dissolved solids from the acid reaction. Test strips are less accurate in this condition. A liquid drop kit using phenol red reagent gives a reliable pH reading.

Step 4: Only add more acid if pH is still above target after four to six hours. If pH dropped to target or below, stop. The next dose may not be needed, or a smaller top-up dose is all that is required.

Step 5: Retest total alkalinity if you have made multiple acid additions. Repeated dosing lowers TA alongside pH. If TA has dropped below 80 ppm, do not add more acid without also planning to restore TA afterward.
